Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of LIGHTENING FORCE ( aka LIGHTNING FORCE aka THUNDER FORCE IV 4 ) for the Sega Genesis 16 Bit Mega Drive video game console system. This SHMUP horizontal scrolling shooter on the Megadrive is a very fun and challenging airplane shooter. Made by the masters of space ship shooting games on the Genesis, Technosoft, this is basically Thunder Force IV. We’re not sure why they dropped the Thunder and went with Lightning or Lightening. But this is TF4 and it’s incredible, one of the best shooters on the 16bit Megadrive. As with the other Thunder Force games like TF2 and TF3, you are that lone starfighter shooting aliens and countless bad guys in a variety of well designed and exotic locations in deep space. Many of the familiar weapons are here like Hunter. TF4 will remind you of games like Life Force and Gradius with it’s familiar yet enjoyable side scrolling shmups style gameplay with power ups and end bosses and whatnot. The music is fantastic and everyone with a Sega should own this game and play it for days, it has incredible gameplay and the footage shows a variety of the levels and situations that you encounter. Hint: if you go to the options, (which is by pressing all 3 genesis buttons while holding start in the intro of the game), change your selection of lives to 1, by doing this, you now have 99 lives!

Out oif the three Thunderforce games I own on my Genesis, this one’s my favorite, very likely the best shmup on the Genesis with Eliminate Down a close second (it’s pricey unlike TF 4/LF), but ED is barely ahead of Thunder Force 3, Gaiares, and TF 2 in my book.

how can you be soo amazingly good at these games? I played since 1993 and i really cant complete anything in these tyoe if shooters.
Well Ok i did complete first level of thuderforce 2.
This game apparently has a problem that others have reported. 1:08 apparently, we’re supposed to select which stage to attack, however, the game seems to automatically go through the stages in their generic order. Thus, the player is optioned to make a selection which they don’t actually have the option to do.
Wow. The opening music & title screen is bad ass. The background is pretty awesome, too.

@TaInTeDlYnX your wrong…..the Pc-engine (japanese turbo grafx) is the best console for classic shooters, rivaled only by Sega Saturn. It has 110 shmups and I recommend looking into it.

When people say genesis/mega drive has shitty sound they clearly never played games like this. The high def graphics model has badass sound it really depended on the developer not the game system. Plus the memory restriction in the cartridge.

I just played this one on my super gameboy. I agree it is a really good game, but I find it a bit too easy. The music in it is fantastic, the TMNT theme is so well done for a game boy game, I was actually surprised when I played it for the first time. The gameplay is basic, but that’s okay. I like basic.
I want to see you kill the thing that goes by at 1:40 I heard you can kill it but I’ve never managed to do it… oh yeah and you’re wrong about the one-hit kick-kill cause you cannot kill that think with 1 kick.
