Walk into a movie with a title like “Zombieland”, you expect a certain kind of flick. A title like that you would hope the flick should be fun,have a tongue firmly in it’s cheek sense of humor, and if they do this right, some scares (being that the movie has zombies and such.)

The world’s fucked, and a zombie outbreak has destroyed everything. In order for you to survive you need to be smart, cautious, and be a bit of an off kilter person to survive it.

hat’s how the films narrator Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has survived. He was already a neurotic shut-in before the zombie outbreak, and strangely being a neurotic shut-in has helped him survive. He has created a list of rules to survive “Zombieland” and with each new incident, he learns and adds to the list just so he can survive.

Soon he meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a crazed badass who apparently having the time of his life in this apocalypse as he found himself to be an effective zombie killer. They team up, fights some more zombies in Tallahassee’s strange personal quest (I’m going to let you see for yourself when you watch the flick to find out what that personal quest is.)

They then bump into Wichita (Emma Stone) and her little sister, Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), a couple of con artist siblings. The quartet form this strange team as they travel on their road trip to California in hopes of going to a amusement park that apparently is “zombie-free”.

At first glance, the number one comparison to “Zombieland” would have to be “Shaun of the Dead”, but other then they’re both zombie/comedies they don’t have much in common.

What “Zombieland” DOES share with “Shaun of the Dead” is the rules on how to portray the zombies in the flick. Like “Shaun”, the zombies in “Zombieland” are treated very scary; they are not silly, goofy monsters. They are deadly predators and are never used in a humors manner. (Note: these are the FAST zombies that 28 days later… and the Dawn of the Dead remake popularized)

The humor thankfully belongs with the characters, and it’s a fun cast with some genuine chemistry.( A pretty funny driving montage really showcases this during the middle of the flick) The fun thing is realizing that ALL of the characters actually seem better off in a land of the undead as we get quick flashbacks to their lives before, hell one of the flashbacks proves even more effective by making one of the characters deeper then they appear to be.

While Eisenberg, Stone and Breslin are pretty good in this, the real star is Woody Harrelson. His Tallahassee is just rules in this. The glee he shows killing zombies and his take no shit attitude are real highlight in this and it’s just great to see Woody Harrelson have fun in this.

Also, there is a great, great, great cameo that I really hope that they don’t even hint in future TV Spots/trailers, because it’s so damn great and it’s my favorite part of the whole movie.

Director Ruben Fleischer (who’s only real credits before this was working on the Jimmy Kimmel Show and a documentary) really proves himself here as he showcases some fun inventive action scenes, a good eye for comedy and some really cool stylish ideas (the way how Columbus’s rules pop up through out the film was a nice touch.)

My only real complaints is the inherent rushness the film has so far. In this cut of the flick the movie movies at a real brisk 80+ minutes, but I honestly feel 10 more minutes wouldn’t hurt it to give it some more meat. Also there are some ideas that are not really fleshed out that I wish they discussed more. One idea was that each person renamed themselves as the city they came from, but for some reason the sisters Wichita and Little Rock are named two different cities kinda randomly (I know if they’re from the same city they can’t have the same name for the movie but why these cities in particular?) One of my favorites is the idea of the zombie kill of the week, but we only get one and it would have been awesome to have seen more.

Honestly, I think a lot of the these problems stems from the fact the movie was originally a TV pilot, and you can see how these things would have developed if this was still a weekly show. (Can you imagine how much fun it would have been to tune in each week see a different zombie kill of the week).

Even with these flaws, the movie is still a ton of fun. Personally, this might be my favorite guilty pleasure movie of the year, and I will wait in hopes to hear if they plan to do a “Zombieland” 2, because I think they just gotten started with what to do with this world.

G.I. Joe, or Action Force to us Brits, was a highly successful brand of Hasbro action toys featuring all kinds of combat expert figures, high-tech vehicles and advanced bases which fuelled many a boy’s playtime. At the height of its popularity back in the 1980s, the Action Force brand spawned a cartoon series, a Marvel comic and even an animated movie before fading away in the early 1990s. Now it’s back on a truly global scale, resurrected in live-action guise featuring an ensemble cast under the guidance of The Mummy and Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers, and it’s hitting cinema screens next August.

Just as the Transformers movie captured the imagination of adults who once played with the Hasbro toys as children while looking to lay the foundations for a new generation of fans to peddle merchandise to, G.I. Joe, also produced by Hasbro, could be brushed off as being a similar cash-in that aims to kick-start a major film franchise while lining the pockets of its executives. Yet, to do so, would ignore the enormous potential for explosive action, the vast range of characters available and the interweaving stories at the disposal of the filmmakers. They just need to get the balance right and keep the fans happy – no mean feat when dealing with a much-loved brand.

This origins movie will introduce many old favourites from the G.I. Joe team and see how its arch rival, the villainous organisation Cobra, is formed. Initially battling Scottish arms dealer James McCullen Destro XXIV (Eccleston), those in the know will where this is going. The real baddies will be the Cobra organisation led by Cobra Commander played by Gordon-Levitt who took the role for the chance to play a larger-than-life villain. The action set pieces can be expected to be spectacular while two new characters, Duke (Tatum) and Ripcord (Wayans), will provide an audience’s point of view on the proceedings given a human edge by G.I. Joe’s martial artist Scarlett and Destro’s partner the Baroness’s romantic lives entwined with their team members. With Rachel Nichols and Sienna Miller taking the respective lead female roles, it’s no surprise to see the outfits are X-Men-style black skin-tight outfits.

Anyone hoping to see their favourite action figure in the flesh will be pleased to see the names of G.I. Joe’s military men such as General Hawk (Quaid), Gung-ho (Fraser) and Heavy Duty (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) on the bill, while Cobra-aligned mercenary Zartan (Vosloo) also makes an appearance. Those likely to generate the most excitement are British martial artist Ray Park as mute ninja Snake Eyes and his Cobra nemesis Storm Shadow played by Hero’s Lee Byung-hun. Park, still best known for his role as Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, practiced wushu for the part and takes on an important role as a fan favourite who may well face off against Byung-hun at some point – a potentially mouth-watering showdown. If it all comes together, G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra could be a blockbuster sensation.

Of course, the last time Stephen Sommers was entrusted with a project this large was when Universal Studios gave him almost free reign on use of its many screen monsters for Van Helsing. That ended up a confused mess which disappointed at the box office and wasted famed characters such as Count Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster. Fingers crossed he can have a more positive effect on G.I. Joe, which was lost in development hell a few years ago when the Cobra organisation was dropped from the script and fans were in uproar. Now, with Cobra re-instated, Sommers has an opportunity to wow cinema audiences with an action adventure on a grand scale. The images released so far show promise; a trailer is eagerly awaited.

Watch ‘Knight and Day (2010)’ Online For Free

Review:
Cruise and Diaz make this movie work, and it works very well! The action was plenty and so was the visual and subtle verbal humor. I have never been a fan of Diaz, but she fit her role perfectly. Cruise knows action and the action was in the same vein as an over the top James Bond movie aka Die Another Day or Mission Impossible. I thought both of those particular films were too crazy in the action department. But I didn’t care how crazy the action scenes in this movie were because the chemistry between the two leads was extremely good and that is all that matters once you start watching. This is the perfect date movie for any age. Several older couples in the theater tonight and they all seemed to enjoy it too. The comedy involved a lot of dry humor, both verbal and visual like in an Indiana Jones (not the horrible Crystal Skull..) movie. No one was really cracking jokes in this movie, but the actors caused me to laugh based on what they did in reaction to what was happening around them and to them. I felt like I was watching a Jackie Chan action movie as it had the same spontaneous humorous action feeling. Cruise and Diaz trot the globe as well and there is lots of cinematic eye candy throughout with the various exotic locations. It was well worth the price of admission and this is coming from a guy who had sworn off non-serious action movies.

Plot:
June Havens (Diaz) finds her everyday life tangled with that of a secret agent (Cruise) who has realized he isn’t supposed to survive his latest mission. As their campaign to stay alive stretches across the globe, they soon learn that all they can count on is each other.

The Buzz:
Another action-comedy casualty? Seems it. As Killers quickly fades from our consciousness, Knight and Day looks poised to take its place. The press has invested in the movie, mostly to remark on its fuzzy marketing campaign and low tracking scores, though many fans and industry people alike have sounded off over fading star power of both Cruise and Diaz. It’s all kinda sad, especially since we think the trailers have been fun and that Tom Cruise has done a good job at trying to be celebrity again.
