This movie follows the life of the legendary archer. In the beginning the man who would become Robin Hood is only interested in himself, and how he will survive into the next day. We see Russell Crowe as a soldier fighting the French in King Richard’s English army. Some very good battle screens are depicted here. Director Ridley Scott knows how to choreograph a fight.
Later when King Richard is killed, Robin leaves and makes his way to the village of Nottingham. He finds the town under the rule of a corrupt and sadistic sheriff, played to the hilt by Matthew MacFadyen. The sheriff has placed a crippling tax on the people of Nottingham, so basically everyone hates his very existence. You’ll hate him too after 3 minutes.

Robin Hood meets the woman who will change the course of his life in Maid Marion. Cate Blanchett plays the role of Maid Marion, and she looks spectacularly beautiful. She has been recently widowed. He falls for her immediately and realizes that his life as previously been one of only self-preservation. To win her hand he will have to change his ways and try to help save the village.
Now the story starts to really roll as we see him begin to put together a group of fellows … mercenaries really .. to help him in his quest to defeat the nasty sheriff and restore order to the town. This gang of “Merry Men”, as they will become to be known, will prey on the upper class to help the people of the lower class … the ones victimized by the sheriff. You’ll recognize this as the old “steal from the rich and give to the poor”. There are some hilariously funny scenes as these groups of vagabonds come out of the forest and start taking from the rich.
The real payoff comes later in the film when some of the battle scenes are shown. These look authentic and believable as all the arrows go flying. I don’t know how they were able to film some of this. It actually looks like arrows are really going through the faces of some of the people.
Ridley Scott has said in interviews that he toyed with the idea of making Robin Hood a 3-D picture like Avatar. He ultimately decided against it. Too bad, because these arrows would have looked fantastic flying through the air in 3D.
Robin Hood is a spectacle not to be missed. Even watching this movie trailer at home on your PC will blow you away.
