Avatar Review (Part 2 of 2)

Paaaaart Two of my Avatar review! I didn’t hate this movie. I just didn’t really like it a lot. I think James Cameron is a great filmmaker and I’ve liked a lot of his movies, but this one was just a little too simplistic plot wise. It worked with Titanic for some reason, but this one not so much? Good times though…

My thoughts on one of my favorite movies of all time already: Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT! WE LOVE U MJ :)

  1. Hmm, review’s pretty much in line with my take on the movie. I also only saw it once and probably will never see it again. Just hope the ground breaking SFX technology get put into a better film eventually.

  2. I can’t wait for the sequel…because I wanna see the review of it.

  3. Terrific stuff – really intelligent, insightful, hilarious and fair minded. But sort out that basement.

  4. Does anybody else think Avatar would have made a better anime series? Imean get a good director who can handle complex multilayered characters and who has a deft hand at portraying black and gray morality and you’d have an epic show.

  5. This should have been a miniseries or even an hour long dramatic series to give more room and time for both sides if the conflict to be fleshed out

“The Na’vi were a little too perfect and harmonious” – This really drives the point home. Cameron had an opportunity to flesh out those characters and even show prejudice on both sides (humans and Na’vi). Instead he just made it: Na’vi are right and peaceful, whereas humans are bad. What could have been a complex 3 hour story about those internal conflicts and those characters trying to work past it during warfare on both sides, turned into just an action movie.

movie, it can’t even claim to take CGI in a completely new or inventive direction. Music: a small point but as someone who grew up with John Williams’ score in a lot of my favorite movies, I can tell you music is a big part of telling the story. James Horner, the composer of Avatar, I’m sorry, did a mediocre job with the music. There were 1-2 gems in there but for the most part, it was just unmemorable videogame noise. It pains me to say it because the Titanic score was a masterpiece.

Visual effects: I figured out part of the reason why the CGI didn’t completely wow me. Despite being cool-looking, the imagery, like the story itself, was extremely generic. The floating mountains? Complete knock-off of Roger Dean or Castle in the Sky. The Navi looked like anime cat-people/Native American/African-American/Disney. I know no artwork is ever original but usually, people try to be creative and have their own unique spin on their art. Since CGI is the thing to boost about in this

  9. Message to Cameron: if the most memorable character from your movie is the two dimensional badguy everyone is supposed to hate, to the point that he develops a significant fanbase who see him as the actual HERO of your little filmed fanfic, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!!!

  10. Naive or native also. Two for the price of one.

  11. william shatner…lol

  12. 3:10 It was.

I want a pizza roll! 28 south avenue, smithtown NY!

  14. LOL, this guy is fucking hilarious.

  15. @xraycat30 So what truth does Blue Poles tell you about yourself? What does it teach about others? I understand what you’re saying but not all movies are art, some are just entertainment.

@xraycat30 Okay, wow. Um, I was joking about Transformers being art. I’m quite aware of what exactly Transformers is. Does it take away from being a fun but dumb movie? Absolutely not. In fact, it’s one of the best put-together fun, dumb movies I’ve seen. At least the characters in Transformers have SOME dimension to them even if they’re live-action cartoons. As for my definition of art, it’s just mine. You don’t have to accept it. I always what art was was an open-ended interpretation.

  17. …..despite it having no desire to express a truth about anything…despite it’s characters being caricatures and not real people…despite it’s apathy to the intellects of it’s audience…despite all of this, then you simply do not yet understand what art is and most likely, it’s due to opular culture which is ubiquitous and shallow. Simply causing an emotion does not qualify something as art…Cocaine does that as does being cut off in traffic. Someday you might learn better….cheers!

  18. @floriszaire145..youngster…simply put…you’re wrong. If your astute enough, in time you’ll learn that your liberal vision of artistic appreciation is deeply flawed by a belief that truth exists differently for different people. This is an idea that is pushed on us by a hedonistic mainstream culture that promotes the concept of self above the concept of truth. Truth is universal and permanent. It can be expressed in different ways, but if you think Transformers is art…despite it…

I liked the movie, mainly because Quaritch was badass, and the effects were good. Not to mention that fantastic battle scene.

But I get everything this guy says, and its fucking hilarious.

  20. William Shatner….HeHeHe….

  21. floriszaire145

What’s worst is that Cameron’s heart isn’t in his own message, to treat our environment and each other with respect. He’s only interested in pawning off sermons and merchandise, giving himself a huge pat on the back because he “dared” talked about racism and conservation. And rather than getting people to realize the beauty we have on Earth, people are depressed that they can never go to Pandora and become a Navi. *sigh* Cameron truly is a “snake oil’s salesman” but a good one, I have to admit.

  22. floriszaire145

simpler. If in a movie/book/tv show if you honestly and genuinely care about the characters and the story, and it touches your heart in an honest way, that’s what makes it art. If you feel anything while listening to music, even if it just makes you giddy and want to dance, that’s art too. Avatar fails not only as art but even great entertainment as well. It’s the cinematic equivalent to cotton candy. Heck, Transformers succeeds more as both entertainment and art:} then Avatar.

  23. floriszaire145

@xraycat30 I respectfully disagree on your view of art. I don’t think art should TELL us the truth. I think art by its nature shows something about human nature anyway. I think art SHOWS us the truth but lets the reader/viewer/listener have their own interpretation on it. Because Avatar “tells” us a truth about us but taken to its extreme. It punches the viewer in the heart and orders them how to feel. That’s cheating, manipulative, and an insult to the viewer. My own definition of art is

  24. Man! that’s amazingly detailed review and i like it.
Generally i like this movie as it helped with the awareness of being environmentally friendly and living a green life style.

  25. Oh salgurdar…if you want to see a good science fiction film, see “Children of Men”. It has a real purpose and point….unlike the PC formulaic Avatar.
