Let’s Play Ultima VII 03: Lolo, you Thief!

Yes, I didn’t do it, honest! It was my companion! Bad, BAD companion! No supper for you for stealing equipment we need!

It always struck me as odd that all the other programmers thought Richard Garriot had a british accent, since he was always an american. Ah well.

  1. I really like the way you manage items! You can MAKE a bag of money! sweet! X]

  2. Just saw this, but you mention you closed the blacksmith’s door by accident–actually, it’s supposed to close itself, to make it seem haunted.

  3. The roof, on the roof of the blacksmith’s shop, behind the chimney there’s a secret warp point to a cave with every item in the game and a warp zone. It’s a programmer’s debug location to test the operation of the rest of the game.

  4. @raCteJ More importantly, every NPC in Ultima VII had their own story, motivations and dialog. It didn’t feel as if they existed just for the player’s benefit, like so many do today. They’d say things like, “You’re on a quest to save the world? That’s nice. Now let me tell you about how I put my back out the other day.” Just like real people, the world revolved around them, not you, even for the lowliest peasant. That’s a feature you still don’t see in CRPGs today.

  5. You left the great dagger! It turns into a two-handed sword when you swing it, but it wielded as a one-handed weapon.

  6. I’ve always wanted to play some of the Ultima games, including UO…

But the graphics… Oh, the graphics… They are so TERRIBLE…

Don’t think I’m a graphics-loving fag. I love many 80′s and early 90′s games, but this weird isometric perspective just hurts my eyes. Also, the “mouse-friendly” interface is clumbsy and slow. I hate how you pick up the items and such.

I’ve tried to pick up an Ultima game about 5 times in the last 10 years, to no avail.

  7. Lolo’s a silly name LOL

  8. The question comes to mind: Will Kiko ever pay for any equipment?

  9. @ratboy2713 And to think, in the time that this game takes place, the left hand was said to be the hand of the Devil. Heh.

  10. @cjrjrjr Most games nowadays don’t even really have any day or night changes like that. Most of them are set to a specific time of day for certain areas no matter what, and the ones that do change time are almost all just aesthetic aspects- it doesn’t affect gameplay in the least bit; whereas this game makes it a very important part where you can’t even progress at certain points unless you’re at the right place at the right time. Odd how games regressed in that aspect, huh?

  11. The fellowship? Wow. I never thought the fellowship of the ring would murder anyone. Maybe the blacksmith took the one ring.

  12. MasterOfTheVoids

@usagichan9991 well i figured it out and lolo is back to his thiefing ways
*lolo walks in and steals gold* lolo you thief!!!

  13. @MasterOfTheVoids Well, the creators of Exult decided to change many features of the original games, too many features, IMO. One change is not being able to steal items so easily like Kiko does, in the original DOS version.

  14. MasterOfTheVoids

@usagichan9991 yea im playing the exult version why is something wrong with it?

  15. @MasterOfTheVoids Are you playing the Exult version? If so, that is why, and why I dislike the Exult version. I prefer the original DOS mode of playing still.

  16. MasterOfTheVoids

when i played this and tried stealing it didnt let me even thogh i gave it to lolo did i do something wrong?

  17. @cjrjrjr quite a lot of NWN single player modules implement it. There’s gems at the NWNVault, like “Dance with Rogues” (warning : adult themes inside! And drows, and backstabbing, …).

  18. I wish you could narrate the whole game :(

  19. Wow, the fellowship sounds alot like scientology

  20. @ScreamingDoom Yeah, it does have great mods and scripting ability. For schedules I tried the Living cities of Vvardenfell mod but didn’t really like it, as it just teleports people at arbitrary moments.
I tried scripting a bit on 1 character, and I think it can be done better than LCV, but it would be a big project.
My character in that game is a sneaky assassin type, so I was disappointed I couldn’t study my prey, and drop on them in a dark alley on the way home from work or something. :)

  21. @gdement There are mods which add NPC schedules to Morrowind. Morrowind seems to have been only 85% finished in a lot of regards; it definitely feels a bit unpolished in many small details (Vvarenfell seems really, really devoid of life with only handfuls of people in towns and virtually no one on the roads — and the same six wildlife creatures every once in a while). Again, though, the mods really make up for it.

  22. You take “tests” to join the Fellowship, eh? And they’re a somewhat shady religious group?

One wonders if they profess the evils of Thetans and talk about Lord Xenu.

  23. I just started the game; I got to the ‘hidden room’ (you know, the one where you enter the chimney), took the spellbook and reagents, teleported back to Trinsic, then using the crates I had stacked up to get to the hidden room, I got myself out of Trinsic far earlier than usual (fuck you, copy protection), killed a deer and found a crate full of very helpful armour. Ah, there’s nothing like cheating.

  24. I at first thought it was part of the game when I first heard the voice only to realise it was Kiko. He be a great voice actor in games if the companies ever gave him the chance.

  25. You know, I really wish I had known you could just give everything to Iolo and spared myself the trouble of skulking about like a thief in the night to rob Trinsic (and every other town in the game) blind. :/

  26. Dude.. the laught at 1:35 is the same as GOKU —lol

  27. who would say its cheating? It is literally a reward for actually taking time to explore the creations the developers made. Thats why they have them so you do explore the areas instead of doing mission after mission

  28. Oh lord. Lord British thy Uber nerd approacheth!

  29. Wait- didn’t the guy you’re hunting down seem to have to take a boat to Britannia…? If he could have just walked there in about 5-10 minutes, why’d he need to… Huh.

  30. Holy crap! I didn’t know that existed! That’s awesome. :)

  31. lolo the thief steals another billion peoplles 401k’s

  32. 4.When you get into the room, use a light source (or the fire sword) because the room is dark.
5.get as many items as you wish.
6.go on the platform, and youl be in a hallway. It is dark, so use a light source.
    7. Walk down the hallway, youl come by a cirlce of runes, dont touch one of them, or you’ll be teleported somewhere random.
8Walk past the runes to find more magic items inclueding a basket with a soulcage. 9Take any items, then use the teleporter that takes you to Lord British.

  33. Kiko, this is a MUCH NEEDED SECRET!:
    1.Go to Christophers blacksmith shop.
2.use cratres found around trisic and build a crate ladder outside the door archway, not the outside walls.
3.If you manage to get on the roof, go behind the chimney, and walk into the chimney, then you will be teleported to a room with 8 chests that are for you and you 7 companions. (continued on next coment)

  34. I don’t know the history of it, but I bet the reason they hijacked that particular song (God Save the King) was just another way of rebelling against British royalty. :)

Kind of like how it became patriotic to drink coffee instead of tea, Webster deliberately changing the spelling of some words, etc.

  35. am i the only person who realises that the background music is actually hyms, like all things great and small etc, dont ask me why i know that, i just happened to notice it after having to sing the shit when i was at school

  36. Good lord man! How much treasure do you need!

  37. lol i was thinking:”god that sword sound is annoying” right before u said so

  38. ummm, what was wrong with the horse at 1:09? Oh, and I loved the fifteen seconds of chest bashing…”open…open!…OPEN!” hilarity!

  39. I remember there was a hidden room in trinsic on the roof of some building in the south west. It contained a complete equipment for the whole party including magic armors and weapons and a complete spellbook. To get there you had to gather enough crates from around the city to stack them up and build stairs to the roof. Then you have to walk into the chimney and you’ll find yourself in said room. You can google it also… (^__^)b I LOVE THIS GAME!

  40. TwilightPrince123

“Yes…THAT is the proper way to go, Avatar.”

Quiet, I’ll go where I want.

Hehe, I always badmouthed the Guardian.

  41. anything beats the French anthem sadly.

  42. DarkArtistKaiser

You know, this made me realise. WHy waste all that time finding a key for a box, when you can just, you know, bash the chest open?

  43. AlmightyElemental

Nope, sorry. I’m thinking of My Country ‘Tis of Thee. Right train of thought though. Heheh…

  44. AlmightyElemental

I might be confusing songs being that it’s late at night but I’m PRETTY SURE that’s God Bless America. Maybe it’s America the Beautiful…one of those. There’s an American Patriotic song that has the same tune, I’m SURE of it!

  45. The score of ‘God Bless America’ doesn’t sound British. Are you sure about it being stolen?

  46. AlmightyElemental

Hmmm….well, guess that’s egg on my face. I also didn’t realize we Americans stole the tune of “God Bless America” from you guys. Ya…sorry about that…

  47. While a popular patriotic song, what you’re hearing in the video (‘Rule Britannia!’) is not the British national anthem.

You might want to look up ‘God Save The King/Queen’ instead. :)

  48. VincentPrice111

Sure a lot of items for one chest.

  49. If you press “C” you can switch combat mode on and off, and the ESC button will close all open things such as backpacks and character portraits.

  50. You don’t have to smash the chest open, as there is a key hidden under a nearby stone.
