Classic Game Room HD reviews R-TYPE for the Sega Master System from 1988! This legendary horizontal SHMUP space ship shooter is one of the most iconic video games ever created. This review of R-Type shows gameplay footage from Rtype showing the reviewed game in all of its HD glory (upconverted from the Sega Master System) As SHMUPS go this is one of the big ones and has seen numerous sequels and remakes on various consoles ranging from the Super Nintendo to PS2 and Xbox Live Arcade XBLA. Blow away the Bydo bitches with an arsenal of laser beams and missiles and power ups and the force cannon thingy that you can shoot out and reel back in. R-Type gameplay is unique and different from many side scroller shmup shootersl like Gradius and Thunder Force 6. So here it is from Classic Game Room, a review of the legendary R-Type for Sega Master System. Originally released in the arcades in 1987 from Irem, R-Type is the bomb and an a true old school shmup arcade coin-op classic worthy of being reviewed and respected by Classic Game Room. Interestingly R-Type is not available on the NES.
Classic Game Room season 1 – 1/20/2000 If you look up the word “Old School” in the dictionary you’ll see a picture of this game. It was made for the legendary Atari 2600 in 1978, way before such things as motorized horseless carriages, World War I and light beer. It was probably made before your parents even met. Game Room reviewed Atari, NES, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast and Playstation… too bad they didn’t get to Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 or Wii.
Video Rating: 4 / 5
I remember my Grandpa and Dad playing this game constantly when I was a child, my Grandpa still has his sega master system and this game…I should go borrow it.
a few years back me & a mate were talking about the hardest games we’d ever played, and i mentioned r-type. so i took my master system to his house having never passed the first level before, and completed it in one go without dying once with my friend watching. i havnt completed it since then. great game
You should review Gunstar Heroes for the genesis
@BlackArtsShinji In my opinion, this game has the best songs ever considering it was 1987.
My first game system……ah yes got it when i was four in 1987. Astro Warrior ruled
@BlackArtsShinji
Yes the R-type series had nice music, just not this one
Has anybody here ever heard the FM version of the music of this game? It’s SO COOL!
you have too many awesome videos! its gonna take forever to watch them all!
It’s really wierd, the Game Boy Version had less Flicker!!
This looks like such a good port! Quite surprised.
@Forzaabruzzo
Its too bad that the pc-engine bested both the NES and the Master System on every level though. Truly the pc-engine under NEC’s endless stupidity was its only weakness, as it was still king of the new fangled cd format and 8 bit superiority in general. In fact check out R-type for the pc engine- Shit is arcade perfect conversion.
@BlackArtsShinji oh yea. best shump music
The Master System really had some awesome visuals for an 8-bit console. It was definitely the more powerful of the competing 8-bit consoles, and I think its game library overall was better and of greater quality than NES games. The biggest difference in the end was the fact that Nintendo was being run by people that actually knew how to run a successful business. They tied up most the 3rd party developers to exclusive licenses, thus leaving Sega with little 3rd party support.
I don’t have brains in jars hanging from my ceiling, but I do have aborted fetuses in jars hanging from my ceiling.
Mark, if you want a 2D horizontal shooter like R-Type for the Genesis, Hellfire is a title you might want to check. I’m just not sure if it game out in the US.
This game rulezz! Brains in vats are pure rock’n'roll ,,/
Great review man! I used to have Super R-Type when I was 5. My favorite in the series is R-Type 3 for the SNES. They brought back the old style from the first game and remastered the style. They even play a remixed version of the first stage song in the first R-Type in the first R-Type 3 stage. The music in R-Type 3 kicks ass! And so does the rest of the music in the series.
i consider R-type the father of shooters as well as Gradius
and Galax the Grand daddy of shooters
ur good in classic game man
this game is like Gaiares, you die and start all over at the start of the level
And it’s a more accurate port of the arcade version, which is good.
Actually, to access the ‘super stage’, look at 6.16 of this review and check the top of the screen…you’ll see 2 green pillar like objects
…I can’t remember which one it is, but if you can manover your ship to them AND reverse into it, the screen will flash and you’re in the super stage!!
*You can only enter the super stage ONCE per game.
Let me know how you got on!
Bet you didn’t know there’s an EXTRA stage in this game ?? (only available on the Master System version)
Its called the Super Stage and it accessed on the ‘caterpillar stage’. Too long to explain to do it, you’ll have to google it.
Happy researching…
never was a big fan for some reason, i always prefered astro warrior and fantasy zone 2
You should play in Japanese Master System
on a side note, this isn’t afucking review. it’s random conversations about anything other than the game for 95% of the video. and when they do talk about it, it’s not even a fucking review. classic game room really is horrible. they’re not informative at all.
and if they wanna be funny, be infoemative as well. x-play from 2005 and before stuck a nice balance between comedy in information in their reviews
when my dad came over to visit me today, he saw that I had an Atari 2600 and got really happy.
We played Combat for a good 2 hours until he left. need to get me some mor atari games. I only have 4 as of now. I also need an atari 7800.
you havent fallen yet
i think the tanks game on wii play is based on this and also my bird threw seed at me while i was watching this video
you guys are idiots. to start off with pong was the first video game NOT the tank game. and without atari there would be no video game machines at all. but most of all i would like to tell you that a nine year old boy invented all the atari games—- airhead. so get a life!!!!
HOLY SHIT, THERE’S A PLAYSTATION !2! NOW?!?!
im gonna say one thing MOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAALLLLLLLL COOOOMABT
@devonjames10 how can he show up in the game if he wasn’t even a thought. Shigeru Myamoto was probably still in college back then. I agree with orionpax55 some people commenting are… real… idiots
@devonjames10 Show me. Point to evidence. I think you’re full of shit.
You know some… people commenting are… real… idiots
@Tigerman1138 Yes, stupid head. But this is his very first appearance in video game history. Look it up, you’ll find it.
@devonjames10 Oh come on! Wasn’t he “jumpman” from Donkey Kong?
Fun Fact: Mario (yes, THAT Mario) is in this game. This is actually his very very VERY true first appearance in video game history. He actually controls the blue tank.
I wanna see atari games being played on HD tvs, lol
5:08 look at dave’s eyes! they are freaking red! I wonder how much combat he’s been playing!
the tanks look like y-wings w00t
I loved this game way back when.
the guy on the right sucks
this takes me right back
I love this game, it’s simplicity is just beautiful, so is that wood grain!
You guys had me laughin with the wood grain reference lol I was like hell yeah..EVERYTHING had wood grain in it. Ahhh..memories are so beautiful! You young bucks just keep living. Imagine looking back when you’ll laugh at the 360 one day and thinking damn..we use to actually play that piece of shit lol
I remember playing combat with my buddies for hours, the cartridge wouldn’t leave my Atari for months. Sadly, my Atari is no longer with me, but this vid makes me want to pick one up again.
@lschlachter1 a little late eh
@BiffsGamingVideos Well, I could compare the Atari 2600 to the Astrocade or the Arcadia or the Fairchild Channel F if you want me to be more fair. Those systems were all more powerful than the Atari 2600.
@tombert256 Atari 5200 was released same time as colecovision. That’s the 2 you compare them 2.
